Australian Men’s Health Forum News
“Men’s health is at a critical stage right now. I know that’s a cliché but it’s true nonetheless. It looks like there will be a national men’s health study with the chance of basing future practice on evidence and not just on assumptions about men. We will have a National Policy, at last. There has been a national discussion initiated by the government about the policy. AMHF actively encouraged this process and I have to say that many of you reading this newsletter have done a great job in promoting the national discussion and running extra forums and encouraging submissions.” Prof John Macdonald, AMHF President.

Men’s Health Australia
Please give up five minutes of your time to support the development of a useful National Men’s Health Policy. The Australasian Men’s Health Forum (AMHF) applauds the government for laying the basis for Australia’s first National Men’s Health Policy.
To ensure that the men of Australia benefit appropriately from the new policy, the AMHF is asking you to give up five minutes to do three things to support the development of a useful National Men’s Health Policy: For more information – click here.

Men’s Health, Social bias against men
Dr Elizabeth Celi, author of Regular Joe Vs Mr Invincible was interviewed on the Ten Network’s 9am with David & Kim, about men’s health, domestic abuse and social bias against men. You can view it at the following link:

A girl’s first hero
How dads inspire and support a daughter’s development.
Studies show that dads give girls 90% of their self-esteem before the age of 12. What this means is that girls who grow up without a dad in the home, or one who abandoned them [or was forcibly evicted by the mother and the State], are always going to be a little bit less confident and sure of themselves than peers who grow up with a dad in the home. An involved, engaged dad will be viewed as the first man she ever loved, and someone who loves her unconditionally. “Unlike mom – who many daughters have emotional fights with – dads don’t get into all of the drama and are more accepting of them.”

Defining fatherhood
Fathers’ Day was recently celebrated in the USA and ‘The Washington Times’ ran a series of articles examining fatherhood from various aspects . to read the articles – click here.

‘Husband-beating’ on the rise
It’s been revealed that women are becoming more violent towards their partners.
Figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics show the number of women charged with domestic violence-related assault has increased dramatically.
The figures show 2,336 women faced court on charges of domestic violence in 2007, mainly for bashing their husbands, compared with just 818 in 1999.
News Ltd says men’s groups say they’re happy that police are finally taking men seriously, but it’s still hard for husbands to admit they’ve been attacked by their wives.
Research shows women tend to use guns, knives, boiling liquids and irons to attack their partners.
The increase in violence, which is often fuelled by alcohol, has sparked calls for refuges for men.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch says there’s no definitive explanation for the increasing number of women being prosecuted for domestic violence offences.
As reported by Channel Nine, June 22, 2009.

Sex starved wives taking action
Sex therapists say a new brand of liberated women has emerged – sex-starved wives who are standing up for their needs in the bedroom.
Women with a higher sex drive than their husbands were becoming increasingly vocal about their suffering, sex therapist Bettina Arndt told ninemsn.
“There has been as steady trickle of women coming to me complaining that they are not getting enough sex,” she said. “There are women out there who want a lot of sex and whose husbands simply can’t keep up.”

Family Law – Is The Man The Loser?
“Well of course he is! Because the only winners in family law are those involved with the administering of family law, which has now ballooned into a multi-billion dollar international industry,” said Peter van de Voorde. Dads on the Air recently contributed to a debate on this subject; to read the details – click here.

What separated fathers are up against
The Shared Parenting Council of Australia claims that: “There is definite and aggressive push-back seeking to repeal the minimal legislative changes made in 2006 … and that, in the current left/socialist ALP, environment will lead to that happening. Feminists can smell and have probably been told it and told how to put out ‘public’ pressure to facilitate it”.

Forgotten men Forgotten women
Dads On The Air takes a look at the family law and gender situation in India.
Less than one per cent of fathers gain custody of their children after separation. Uma Challa, founder of the group All India Forgotten Women, talks movingly about the damage being done to men, women and children across the subcontinent by the adoption of the West’s anti-family anti-father ideologies. Make September blue
This is a fundraising initiative for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. This year they are launching a ‘Blue shoes laces at work day’ on 18th September. They have also suggested a couple of other ways you may like to support them in your work place. If you could fax or email the registration slip by July 1, they would be grateful (so that they can ensure that they have enough laces, among other things!). Someone from their office will then ring you to discuss your activities and other ways they can support you to increase awareness of prostate cancer in your workplace.

To cut or not: Circumcision
In the USA circumcision has been common amongst the majority Anglo-Celtic whites and also amongst Afro-American blacks. Australia similarly once conducted routine circumcision of all newborn boys. In both countries a down-turn took place after the mid-1970s, but is now rising again. There are arguments for and against the procedure.

In the meantime:
Two little boys are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room. The first kid leans over and asks, “What are you in here for?”
The second kid says, “I’m in here to get my tonsils out and I’m a little nervous.”
The first kid says, “You’ve got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It’s a breeze!”
The second kid then asks, “What are you here for?”
The first kid says, “A circumcision.”
The second kid says, “Whoa! I had that done when I was born. I couldn’t walk for a year!”

Are you trying to lose weight?
If you’re trying to lose weight through diet alone, you’re less likely to succeed. Exercise as well – among other things – helps keeps your appetite stable.

What is YOUR BMI (Body Mass Index)?
They say that a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while those with a BMI of 30 and above are considered obese. Those with BMI’s of 18.5 or less are considered underweight.
To automatically calculate your BMI – http://www.menshealthsa.co.za/static/tools/bmi.php

ALTHOUGH – there is evidence that the BMI index is an unreliable indicator, see: http://health.msn.com/weight-loss/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100141543

Drinks and your waistline
It’s often said we need to drink eight glasses a day of water, but experts like those at the organisation Kidney Health Australia have backed away from this advice in recent years because there’s no hard science behind it. Instead they say the best rule is to drink when you’re thirsty and use the colour of your urine as a guide. A pale straw colour is the goal. Anything darker means you need to drink more. Cheers.

Two drinks a day
The safe drinking guidelines limit alcohol intake to two drinks a day, for men and women. It’s not wowserism, but an accurate reflection of the risks, says the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Risks of online dating
Online dating has fast become big business. What has spurred on singles to go online dating is the combination of curiosity and excitement in meeting interesting people online. However, this activity to meet people online doesn’t come without a price.
Of course it doesn’t happen all the time. Just every now and then, there are some horror stories about online dating services and some of them are scary enough to send people away from these online dating services for good. For some tips – click here.

Pretty women make men go stupid
Here’s a subject to initiate discussion around the office coffee pot..
A conversation with an attractive woman impairs a man’s cognitive functioning, a new study has found.
Men suffer an immediate decline in IQ when they interact with women, and the change is most pronounced when the woman is perceived as attractive.
Women, however, are more level-headed. They can chat and flirt with attractive men without any decline in IQ.
Psychologists at Radboud University in the Netherlands introduced 50 men and 60 women in different pairings, and gave them an IQ test afterwards. They found that the men’s IQ declined after talking to a woman and most steeply if the woman was perceived as more attractive. There was no decline in women’s IQ.
This ‘information’ came from ‘Marie Claire’ magazine – YOU evaluate its authenticity.

Custody hearing
A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama in Sydney when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.
The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.
When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the NSW State of Origin team, whom the boy firmly believed were not capable of beating anyone.
IT’S A JOKE!!!!
